Can dogs eat kiwi?
Updated 5 August 2026
Yes. Kiwi flesh is safe for dogs in small amounts, and it does not appear on any major toxic-foods list. Peel it and cut it into slices, because a whole kiwi is the right size to lodge in a greedy dog's throat. A slice or two is a sensible serving.

The detail
Kiwi sits comfortably on the safe side of the fruit bowl. No UK veterinary poison list names it as a danger, and the flesh is soft enough for any dog to manage once sliced.
The practical risk is the shape, not the chemistry. A peeled kiwi is a smooth ball about the size of a squash ball, and dogs that gulp rather than chew can swallow one whole.
Sugar keeps the portions small, as with any fruit. One kiwi holds around 6g of it, which is why the serving is a slice or two rather than the fruit.

Can dogs eat kiwi skin?
It will not poison them, but most dogs are better without it. The skin is rough, fibrous and hard to digest, and a furry chunk swallowed whole can irritate the stomach on the way through.
Peeling takes ten seconds and removes the question. If your dog eats a kiwi skin from the bin, expect nothing worse than a possible loose stool, and mention it to your vet only if vomiting follows.
Kiwi seeds
No action needed. The black seeds are tiny and soft, nothing like the apple pips and fruit stones that vet lists tell you to remove, and picking them out of a kiwi is impossible anyway.
They pass straight through a dog the same way they pass through us.
How much kiwi can a dog have?
A slice or two for a small dog, up to half a fruit for a large one, and not every day. The PDSA's rule for all fruit applies here: very small quantities, as an occasional treat alongside a normal diet.
Whole kiwis are the one real hazard. A dog that snatches one unpeeled can choke on it or swallow it intact, so keep the fruit bowl out of counter-surfing range.
Gold kiwi or green kiwi?
Same answer for both. Gold varieties are a little sweeter and less sharp, green ones carry slightly more fibre, and neither contains anything a dog needs to avoid.
Serve whichever is in the fruit bowl, peeled and sliced, in the amounts above.
Common questions
My dog ate a whole kiwi, skin and all. Should I worry?
The flesh and skin are not toxic, so the watch item is the size of the lump. Look out for gagging, vomiting or refusing food, especially in a small dog, and ring your vet if any of those appear.
Can puppies eat kiwi?
A thin peeled slice is fine for a puppy on solid food. Keep it occasional, because small stomachs are the quickest to protest at new fruit.
Can dogs eat dried kiwi?
Better not. Drying concentrates the sugar and shop versions are often candied on top. Fresh slices are the version worth sharing.
Is kiwi good for dogs?
It is safe rather than useful. The vitamin C and fibre it carries are already covered by any complete dog food, so share it for the tail wag, not the nutrition.
Can dogs be allergic to kiwi?
It is rare, but any new food can disagree with an individual dog. Start with a single slice, and if you see an upset stomach or itching afterwards, drop it and mention it to your vet.
Is gold kiwi safe for dogs?
Yes, same as green. Peel it, slice it and keep to a slice or two. The colour changes the flavour, not the answer.
